I blink, wide awake, at the ceiling as I lie on the unforgiving floor, waiting until the only sounds in the warehouse are deep breaths and soft snores.

My thoughts won’t allow me to fall asleep. Despite my resistance, Rez’s words replay through my mind. I shove them back, but they appear again and again. Dr. Bailey slips in to battle Rez. "Trust no one." Especially the leader of this criminal gang. He’s just trying to win me over, like the doctor said.

I clutch a fistful of blanket. Rez is wrong. I’m not special. I’m a weapon that has to be controlled. Fixed, if possible.

The watch vibrates. I push off the floor and slip outside into the cool night. As soon as I’m several feet away from the warehouse, I flick open the watch. I blink at the green and red phone icons bouncing on the screen. A call? I tap the green one.

“Dr. Bailey?” I whisper.

“Yes. Scarlett, it’s time.”

I blink again. “Time for what?” I breathe. But I know exactly what he’s talking about. My stomach clenches.

“To finish the mission. From what the others tell me, you seem to have gained their trust. And faster than we expected, I might add.”

I nod slowly. So the others did have contact with Dr. Bailey. I wonder what they told him.

“Scarlett? Are you there?”

“Yes, I’m here.”

“Did you hear what I said?”

“Yes, but I…”

“Yes?”

“I don’t think it’s time.”

Dr. Bailey’s sigh comes through clearly. “Why not?”

I bite my lip and look around in the consuming darkness, as if I’ll find the right words there. “It’s just…too soon. We need more time.”

His silence unnerves me.

I close my eyes. “Just a little more.” What could convince him? “In order to make this work right, we need more time.”

“Okay, Scarlett,” he says. “But just remember, succeeding means getting the cure. And that means going back to your family.”

I clench my hands and grit my teeth together. I know, I know. I know.

“And you’re playing a part in purging the country of superhuman criminals. It’s about time these freaks got what they deserve.” His last sentence slithers through clenched teeth, words uncoated in their usual smooth control.

I grimace and swallow the bitter taste in my mouth. I want to retort with some of the same words Rez has said. But anything I say could reveal my true feelings. My true feelings? No, my mixed feelings. My doubts. Whatever they are, he can’t know those.

I end the call and stare into the thick darkness of the shadows, arms limp by my sides. Tears coat my eyes, but none fall. What do I do? It’s like my family and Rez are battling for my attention, my favor.

I’d choose my family every time. But is this the right way to do it? Is there any other way to get the cure without going through with this? If I back out, will they still let me have the cure?

A slim figure slips out of the inky shadows.

My throat tightens and I step back. “Crynn.
